Annoyance re: Loncon3

Jan. 11th, 2014 | 12:30 am
mood: annoyedannoyed

We purchased our memberships to Loncon3 back in April of 2013.  At that time, I requested both email *and* post (snail mail) correspondence.  When I got the email about PR2 being available, I emailed to verify that they did have me down for both, because I had already been seeing reports from people for about a week stating that they had received their copy of the PR.  They confirmed that they did indeed have me down for both and asked that I give it a week, and if I didn't receive it by then, to let them know.  Well, because of the holidays, I gave it a bit longer.

Today, 13 days after the email saying PR2 was sent, I FINALLY got my copy of PR2.  And the address on it is wrong - it's missing my apartment number.  Which I *did* provide to them, and is on my email receipt (I checked).  Is it *really* that hard to make sure that ALL of the data that is given to you makes it into your database for mailing?  I sent an email letting them know that I had finally received the PR, and to PLEASE correct my address to include the apartment information.  I'm REALLY lucky I even got the PR - depending on our mailman of the day, they would have been perfectly within their rights to send it back (to California, but still)!

This did not cause me to lose out on booking my hotel room (even though we aren't sure yet that we can attend), and it did not cause a major issue or hardship for me, but that's because I *also* regularly check (and read) my email and other resources on the Internet.  If I had been relying on the mailed copy of the PR, I'd be a LOT more upset.

ETA:  Apparently their pubs/membership people can't get their shit together.  I'm not listed at all on the membership list in the PR, even though I said it was fine to list me by my real name.  However, Shirt *is* listed - by his real name, when I told them to use his badge name (and provided it).  Apparently they were going by a REALLY DAMN OLD LIST, because he's listed as supporting when we upgraded in April of 2013.  The list says "#### members as of 18 November 2013".  I would personally expect the list *included* with that statement to be accurate AS OF THAT DAY, not from over 6 months prior.  How f*cking difficult is it to make your databases talk to each other and PULL THE CORRECT INFORMATION??????  It REALLY should NOT be that difficult.  I know I could *easily* do it with a function in Excel if necessary!!!!

The worst part of owning pets

For those friends not on Facebook -

I took Gilley to the vet this morning and had to make the hardest decision a pet owner ever has to make.  She stopped eating about a week ago and after an exam, the vet said it was very likely cancer. She will be waiting at the Rainbow Bridge.

I will be getting her ashes in a few days.

Seen on Facebook:
Less than a week now for Conjecture/ConChord 2012! Make sure you got your tickets!!!

Since when does Conjecture sell 'tickets'?  Last time I checked, they sold memberships.  Looks like whoever is posting to facebook needs some education on the differences between a membership and a ticket, as well as just how off-putting the term "tickets" can be to sf/f convention fans.

Evil bank is evil... On top of the very serious medical issues, the bank is now foreclosing on the house editrx recently moved out of, and trying to tell her that it will be complete in 30 days. If you are willing and able, please consider helping. Even boosting the signal is help.

“They Won’t Magically Turn You Into A Lustful Cockmonster”

“They Won’t Magically Turn You Into A Lustful Cockmonster”: Chris Kluwe Explains Gay Marriage To The Politician Who Is Offended By An NFL Player Supporting It
Chris Kluwe

Baltimore Ravens linebacker Brendon Ayanbadejo has spoken out in favor of a Maryland ballot initiative that would legalize gay marriage. Yahoo has published a letter that Maryland state delegate Emmett C. Burns Jr. wrote last week to Ravens owner Steve Bisciotti, urging him to "inhibit such expressions from your employee." This is Minnesota Vikings punter Chris Kluwe's response to Burns.

Dear Emmett C. Burns Jr.,

I find it inconceivable that you are an elected official of Maryland's state government. Your vitriolic hatred and bigotry make me ashamed and disgusted to think that you are in any way responsible for shaping policy at any level. The views you espouse neglect to consider several fundamental key points, which I will outline in great detail (you may want to hire an intern to help you with the longer words):

1. As I suspect you have not read the Constitution, I would like to remind you that the very first, the VERY FIRST Amendment in this founding document deals with the freedom of speech, particularly the abridgment of said freedom. By using your position as an elected official (when referring to your constituents so as to implicitly threaten the Ravens organization) to state that the Ravens should "inhibit such expressions from your employees," more specifically Brendon Ayanbadejo, not only are you clearly violating the First Amendment, you also come across as a narcissistic fromunda stain. What on earth would possess you to be so mind-boggingly stupid? It baffles me that a man such as yourself, a man who relies on that same First Amendment to pursue your own religious studies without fear of persecution from the state, could somehow justify stifling another person's right to speech. To call that hypocritical would be to do a disservice to the word. Mindfucking obscenely hypocritical starts to approach it a little bit.

2. "Many of your fans are opposed to such a view and feel it has no place in a sport that is strictly for pride, entertainment, and excitement." Holy fucking shitballs. Did you seriously just say that, as someone who's "deeply involved in government task forces on the legacy of slavery in Maryland"? Have you not heard of Kenny Washington? Jackie Robinson? As recently as 1962 the NFL still had segregation, which was only done away with by brave athletes and coaches daring to speak their mind and do the right thing, and you're going to say that political views have "no place in a sport"? I can't even begin to fathom the cognitive dissonance that must be coursing through your rapidly addled mind right now; the mental gymnastics your brain has to tortuously contort itself through to make such a preposterous statement are surely worthy of an Olympic gold medal (the Russian judge gives you a 10 for "beautiful oppressionism").

3. This is more a personal quibble of mine, but why do you hate freedom? Why do you hate the fact that other people want a chance to live their lives and be happy, even though they may believe in something different than you, or act different than you? How does gay marriage, in any way shape or form, affect your life? If gay marriage becomes legal, are you worried that all of a sudden you'll start thinking about penis? "Oh shit. Gay marriage just passed. Gotta get me some of that hot dong action!" Will all of your friends suddenly turn gay and refuse to come to your Sunday Ticket grill-outs? (Unlikely, since gay people enjoy watching football too.)

I can assure you that gay people getting married will have zero effect on your life. They won't come into your house and steal your children. They won't magically turn you into a lustful cockmonster. They won't even overthrow the government in an orgy of hedonistic debauchery because all of a sudden they have the same legal rights as the other 90 percent of our population—rights like Social Security benefits, child care tax credits, Family and Medical Leave to take care of loved ones, and COBRA healthcare for spouses and children. You know what having these rights will make gays? Full-fledged American citizens just like everyone else, with the freedom to pursue happiness and all that entails. Do the civil-rights struggles of the past 200 years mean absolutely nothing to you?

In closing, I would like to say that I hope this letter, in some small way, causes you to reflect upon the magnitude of the colossal foot in mouth clusterfuck you so brazenly unleashed on a man whose only crime was speaking out for something he believed in. Best of luck in the next election; I'm fairly certain you might need it.

Sincerely,
Chris Kluwe

P.S. I've also been vocal as hell about the issue of gay marriage so you can take your "I know of no other NFL player who has done what Mr. Ayanbadejo is doing" and shove it in your close-minded, totally lacking in empathy piehole and choke on it. Asshole.

I really hate this apartment

Jan. 24th, 2012 | 11:18 pm

I can't wait to move out of this apartment. Tonight the laundry room flooded (floor drain backed up), and our toilets backed up, and one of them overflowed.  Our storage unit in the laundry room also flooded (again). We'll be looking for a pallet this weekend to put our stuff in the storage unit up off the floor. And looking harder for a new apartment, hopefully to move around May.

I have recently talked to a friend who has agreed to give me a copy of the programming database that Conjecture uses for programming.  The only catch is that I need to find someone who can do the tech support - he doesn't have time (I don't blame him, he's got an 8 month old).  It is written in Perl and has an SQL database (not sure what flavor SQL, but definitely one of the free ones), and runs on Linux.  We have a hosting provider, so that is not a problem.

The original coding was done by three different people, over time... so there are some issues that it would be nice to correct.  In addition, apparently everything references the convention that currently uses the program (the name, facilities, etc..).  I have been told that it will probably take someone competent approximately 10-20 hours to get it set up for Lunacon's use.  It will also need to be password protected (most of it is already set up to be password protected, but I would like to make sure that you can only get to the database through a password protected staff site), so that only people who are authorized can access the database.

Unfortunately, Shirt and I are not coders, so we are looking for a volunteer to help us out.  I'd like to eventually have the other fixes done that need to be done, as well as a few additions (the additions are not a high priority).

If you are interested in volunteering, or know someone who might be interested, please contact me at buddykat@gmail.com.

sad news

Today I had to do one of the few things I don't like about being a pet owner.  I had to make the decision to send Belle to the Rainbow Bridge.  She was fine this morning, then we went out to run a couple of errands and get lunch.   We were gone less than two hours.  When we got home, Belle wasn't in one of her normal spots.  I called her, and heard her meow from the closet.

At first I thought she had just gotten into the closet and was hiding; then I noticed that the pillow she normally sleeps on was not where it normally was - it was on the floor next to the shelves.  When I finally found Belle, she was on the floor, and looked like she might be hurt.  I was able to get her to move and figured out that she wasn't hurt; but she was clearly holding herself in place.  When I tried to pick her up, I realized that there was something very wrong - she started rolling over uncontrollably - she looked like she was spinning.  We took her to the vet right away, but unfortunately, there wasn't much they could do.  We don't have thousands of dollars to spend just to try and figure out what was causing the neurologic problem, and the odds were not good that she would get better.

I held her for a while - they wrapped her in a blanket so she would have something to hold on to - and I could tell she wasn't doing well.  She was breathing hard, barely looking around, her nose was getting warm and dry, and then she started panting off and on.  She knew I was holding her, but she wasn't purring - or trying to get down, like she normally would - at all.

I told the vet my decision, and held her while he gave her the shot.  I'll get her ashes back after she is cremated.
